About the Community Health Fellowship
The Project Horseshoe Farm Community Health Fellowship is designed for recent college graduates who want to spend a year working directly with communities while developing leadership and professional skills.
The fellowship combines community health service, citizen leadership, mentorship, education, and direct engagement. It is particularly relevant for premed students taking a gap year before medical school who want meaningful experience with community health and the social determinants of health.
What You’ll Do
Fellows participate in a variety of community-based and educational activities, including:
- Complete approximately 32 hours per week of direct volunteer service in the community
- Participate in team meetings and regular mentorship
- Receive supervision and guidance throughout the fellowship
- Complete educational programming and assigned readings
- Participate in community engagement activities
- Assist with administrative and operational responsibilities when needed

Applicants can choose from available fellowship locations:
- Greensboro, Alabama
- Perry County, Alabama
- Pomona, California
Placement and availability should be confirmed with Project Horseshoe Farm during the application process.
Compensation and Benefits
The fellowship provides an educational grant along with housing and relocation support.
Educational Grant:
- $1,000 per month for Alabama locations
- $1,300 per month for the California location
Additional benefits include:
- Free housing
- Utilities included
- One-time relocation grant of $100–$300
