About the C.A.R.E. Volunteer Program
The C.A.R.E. Volunteer Program at Mount Sinai Queens offers two volunteer tracks designed to provide support to patients and hospital staff.
C.A.R.E. (Emergency Department): Volunteers greet and engage with older patients in the Emergency Department while providing support to nursing staff.
C.A.R.E. II (Nursing Unit): Volunteers support admitted patients and their families by helping them contact relatives and providing reading materials and information about hospital and community resources.
For premed students looking for direct patient contact, this program can provide meaningful exposure to patients and the hospital environment.
What You’ll Do
Your responsibilities depend on the C.A.R.E. track you join.
C.A.R.E. — Emergency Department
Volunteers may:
- Greet and converse with older patients
- Provide companionship and engagement to patients
- Support nursing staff with appropriate volunteer tasks
- Help create a more comfortable experience for patients in the Emergency Department
C.A.R.E. II — Nursing Unit
Volunteers may:
- Assist admitted patients with contacting relatives
- Provide reading materials
- Share information about hospital and community resources
- Offer support and companionship to patients and their families
Volunteer Requirements
Adult and College Student Track
Applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Commit to approximately 6 hours per week
- Commit for 6 months
- Complete approximately 150 total volunteer hours
- Complete required toxicology screening
- Complete health screening
- Complete a background check
High School Track
A separate high school volunteer track may also be available:
- Approximately 4 hours per week
- Commitment of one semester
Application and Placement Process
The registration and placement process takes approximately 4–6 weeks, from the initial interview through placement.
Applicants should allow sufficient time for interviews, screening, registration, and other required steps before expecting to begin volunteering.
