💡 Expert Tips

Average study runway:

With over 15 years of MCAT prep experience, we can confidently say: most students need about 6 months of structured study to reach peak performance.
Students from Ivy League schools such as Columbia, Yale, and others — with stronger reading comprehension and academic foundations — typically need around 4 months.
Students from open-enrollment colleges (such as CUNY schools — Brooklyn College, Queens College, City College, Hunter, Lehman, etc.) often need closer to 8 months of preparation to build the same level of test endurance and reasoning speed.

Register early ( Or Maybe Not)!

Top cities (NYC, Boston, LA) fill up within hours of registration opening — but don’t worry! Many test dates and locations reopen about two weeks before the exam as students reschedule or cancel their seats.
You can also set up notifications on the AAMC website to be alerted when new seats open.
The only test dates that are typically harder to book are January and late May, which fill up quickly across most regions.

Align your score:

If you’re planning to apply this cycle to MD programs, aim for your MCAT score to post before AMCAS opens in June.
If you’re applying to DO programs, it’s fine to take the MCAT later in the summer.
For Texas medical schools (TMDSAS), try to have your score ready by mid-May, as their application review process begins earlier.

Manage anxiety:

Simulate real test timing and breaks to build true exam endurance.
Complete all official AAMC materials — the entire bundle, no excuses. These are the closest you’ll get to the real exam experience.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

When should I take the MCAT?

If you’re applying in June 2026, test by March–May 2026 so your score is ready when AMCAS opens.

Most students need about 6 months of consistent preparation (roughly 300–400 hours total).
Give yourself a bit more time than you think you’ll need — life happens, and having an extra month or two can make a huge difference in raising your score.

At MCAT King, most students enroll in the 4-month prep course with Prof. Z, and then continue studying independently for an additional 1.5–2 months, focusing on AAMC practice exams and fine-tuning timing and endurance.

Absolutely. We’ve helped hundreds of Canadian and global students gain admission to U.S. medical schools through MCAT prep, application consulting, and essay guidance.

It’s never too early to start! The best thing you can do now is to strengthen your biology foundation while you’re still in school.
We highly recommend getting the MCAT King Biology I and MCAT King Biology II books and carrying them with you — read them alongside your biology coursework.

You can find them here:
📘 MCAT Biology I: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Review
📗 MCAT Biology II: Systems and Physiology Review

Aim to read each book three times — repetition builds comprehension, recall, and long-term memory. The earlier you start, the easier your MCAT prep journey will be.

  • Absolutely! There are two great ways we can help if your exam is right around the corner:
  1. Private Tutoring:
Many students love working one-on-one with our tutors to review practice tests or tackle challenging passage types — especially in biochemistry enzyme questions, lab techniques, and other tough science topics.
  2. On-Demand Courses & Workshops:
Check out our on-demand MCAT workshops — they’re a fantastic way to quickly strengthen your skills in specific sections like Psych/Soc, CARS, and Science Passages. You can study at your own pace and focus exactly where you need improvement.
