1st Class – Study Plan & Atoms
Homework Assignment
- Reading:
- Please read Chapters 2, 3, and 4 of the Kaplan Chemistry Review book (a copy can be found in the Google Drive).
- As you read, highlight important details, take notes, and complete the end-of-chapter questions.
- Add a calendar reminder to review these three chapters again in 30 days. Repetition is key.
- Note: Chapter 1 of the book will be assigned next week (after the 3rd session), so you do not need to read it yet.
- CARS Practice:
- Start with one CARS passage per day.
- Give yourself 10–11 minutes to complete each passage.
- Spend at least 30 minutes reviewing your answers in detail.
- A good resource is the Princeton Review Hyperlearning CARS Workbook (copies and other materials are available in the Google Drive).
- Formulas & Constants to Memorize (for next class):
- T=1/f (Period and Frequency)
- v=λf (Wave Velocity, Wavelength, and Frequency)
- E=hf (Photon Energy)
- Planck’s Constant: h ≈ 6×10−34 J\s
- Speed of Light: c ≈ 3×108 m/s

Class Recap
In this session, we introduced the MCAT timeline along with the essential do’s and don’ts of preparation, including strategies for how to study effectively for each section of the exam.
We then covered key foundational concepts:
Application and review of the related formulas
Isotopes and the ratio of neutrons to protons
Electron excitation
Physics review: period, frequency, wavelength, and photon energy
