NYU Grossman School of Medicine: What the Numbers Actually Say
Home • Medical School Insights • NYU Grossman School of Medicine: What the Numbers Actually Say
If you’re applying from New York or New Jersey, NYU Grossman is probably on your list, or at least on your radar. It’s also one of the most intimidating names on it. So what does it really take to get in? Let’s look at the most recent class profile.
The Numbers
- Applications received: 8,271
- Interviews offered: 821 (roughly 10% of applicants)
- Accepted: 208 (about a 2.5% acceptance rate)
- Matriculated: 106 students (91 MD, 13 MD/PhD, 2 oral and maxillofacial surgery) • Median MCAT: 523 (range 516-527)
- Median undergraduate GPA: 3.98 (range 3.79-4.0)
- Full-tuition scholarship: awarded to every student in the class
- Average age: 23 (range 20-30)
What Stands Out
Every student received a full-tuition scholarship. That is a major draw, and it is a big reason NYU attracts a deeply competitive applicant pool from all over the country.
The funnel is steep. With 8,271 applications and 821 interviews, only about one in ten applicants is invited to interview. Once you’re in the room, the odds improve considerably: 208 acceptances from 821 interviews is roughly 25%. Getting the interview is the hardest part, and that comes down to your GPA, your MCAT, and the story your application tells.
The stats are very high. The median MCAT is a 523 and the median GPA is a 3.98. Even the bottom of the reported range, a 516 MCAT and a 3.79 GPA, is strong, so a score in the low 510s on its own will not make you competitive here.
The class is small and diverse. With only 106 matriculants, every seat counts. Incoming students speak languages including Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Spanish, and Ukrainian. Strong numbers get you considered, but your experiences, background, and story are what set you apart from the other high scorers.
What this means for your MCAT prep
If NYU is a target, plan to be at or near a 520+ and treat your GPA and experiences as part of a complete package. And remember to study the schools too: knowing a school’s real numbers early helps you set a realistic target score and build a smart school list.
