Position Description


The Integrative Rheumatology and Orthopedics Center of Excellence (IROC) at the Hospital for Special Surgery is looking to hire two new research assistants beginning in the late spring/early summer of 2025.


Their team conducts research on various aspects of rheumatic diseases, including the cellular and molecular characterization of disease subtypes, orthopedic outcomes, and health disparities among patients with rheumatic disorders. The position involves extensive patient interaction and collaboration with physicians from various specialties within the hospital, and it provides an excellent opportunity for students preparing to apply to medical school.


The Research Assistant (RA) is an integral member of the research team responsible for a variety of tasks essential to the conduct of clinical research. This position involves a great deal of patient contact as well as interaction with physicians of various specialties in the hospital. Duties include (but are not limited to) recruitment of patients, assessment of eligibility criteria, administration of questionnaires, coordination of study visits, obtaining specimens from the operating room, processing of biospecimens, obtaining regulatory approvals, and maintaining accurate databases. S/he will have proven abilities to work autonomously, bearing independent responsibility to ensure data accuracy and timely follow-through of study procedures.


Research Assistants are mentored by Drs. Susan Goodman and Bella Mehta as well as senior research collaborators. Opportunities for authorship and presenting at academic conferences are also offered.  


Responsibilities include:


  1. Identify, screen, recruit, obtain consent from patients for participation in research studies

  2. Administer questionnaires, interviews in-person, electronically, by mail, or over phone

  3. Coordinate patient visits; ensure protocol compliance

  4. Prepare, submit, maintain study-related materials/approvals for Institutional Review Board (IRB)

  5. Schedule and set agendas for study team meetings; send meeting notes afterwards (emphasis on action items)

  6. Regularly report on progress towards project milestones

  7. Organize and maintain all files and documents related to specific projects (electronic and physical files as applicable)

  8. Design/maintain databases (i.e., REDCap), data collection forms, source documents, IRB documents, etc.

  9. Collect, process, store, ship blood/tissue/microbiome specimens (phlebotomy training provided as applicable)

  10. Prepare and submit abstracts, manuscripts, and presentations to disseminate study results/progress (includes proofing and editing, collection of financial disclosures, etc.)

  11. Assist in grant documents/submissions

  12. Update curriculum vitae for PIs and co-investigators as applicable 

  13. Create/maintain study-specific instruction manuals and administrative training documents


Position Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree

  2. Clinical research experience preferred

  3. Facility with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint

  4. Excellent interpersonal skills

  5. Strong time management and organizational skills

  6. Ability to use tact, discretion, and sound judgment when dealing with confidential information
